12 Weeks

I had my 12 week doctor's appointment today.  The doctor said that things are looking great, but I am measuring 2 weeks ahead of where I should be at this point.  I got to hear the babies heartbeat for the first time.  The heartbeat was in the 140-150 range.

Feeling ok, but tired.  I've had a few run in's with feeling sick, but nothing too terrible.  I'm starting to feel a little better now.  Just in time for our cruise we are taking with work.

We told our families last week finally.  They are all so excited, just like we knew they would be.

Next appointment is March 8th.

Baby #2

We are excited to announce Baby Sterken #2 is on his/her way in August!  BJ, Sam, and I couldn't be more excited.

We found out in the beginning of December that we were expecting, but waited a little while this time to tell friends and family.

We are excited to add a new member to our family and can't wait to meet him/her.

Sam - 16 Months

Our little girl is 16 months old today!  How did that happen?
She is showing off her independence in a big way lately, and rarely allows us to help.  This makes mealtime interesting because we usually have to try to have something to eat that she can eat with her fingers.  We've offered her a fork and spoon which she is getting the hang of slowly.  She also loves to drink out of a regular cup, but hasn't gotten the concept of pulling it down from her lips when she is done and has drenched herself many times.

She loves to pretend to brush her teeth, but will not let us actually get in her mouth with her toothbrush to actually get them clean.  The doctor said she should be brushing them regularly at 2 years old, so I figure we have a little time to get her better at actually brushing and not just sucking on the toothbrush.

She has grown in the last couple weeks.  We kind of skipped right over her 9 month clothes and is now in 9-12 month and 12-18 month clothes mostly.  She has one pair of shoes that fit her which are size 4, and I think we'll be moving out of those soon.  Apparently when I bought clothes early I bought in 12 or 18 months because her closet is overflowing with outfits right now.  We have to weed through some of the stuff she is now wearing and get rid of some of stuff that she has outgrown, there is no reason all the clothes she has ever worn just in case we have another girl down the road.  I have at least 5 tubs of clothes full and she has only grown out of 3 different sizes so far.

I am taking Thursday afternoons off most weeks and really enjoy the time that Sam and I get to spend together on those afternoons.  Usually we plan something out of the house, but on days like today when we have no plans, we have so much fun hanging out at home.  BJ picks her up from daycare at 3:00 most days and they have 3-5 as their one on one time.  It's so much fun for me to come home and hear about all the stuff they did in those two hours.  BJ is such an amazing father and I love how their relationship grows from this time alone they get 4 days a week.

Sam is still getting her last two molars in on one side of her mouth, so right now she has 10 teeth total with 2 more coming in.  The molars have been hard on her and she hasn't been sleeping through the night most nights.  The problem is that she can only sleep when she is alone, so if we bring her into bed with us, she thinks it's time for her to entertain us, and none of us sleep.  She has outlasted crying it out.  She is much more persistent than we are patient in the middle of the night.  We're working on the sleep thing and hope it's back to normal when those teeth come in finally.

She is so much fun to have around, she loves dancing, and will sing the ABC song with us.  She loves having an audience, and will do anything she can to get a laugh or reaction from us (good or bad).  We're pretty much head over heels in love with this little girl, and can't imagine how we entertained ourselves before she came along.

Halloween

Our friends Bill and Laura were kind enough to let us borrow a costume that their daughter had worn last year. So this year Sam was a ladybug. We took her downtown Madison Friday afternoon to trick or treat at the stores on the capital square and on State Street. She did so good sitting in her stroller and was so cute hesitantly taking candy from the bowls.

Saturday night we had some friends over for a mini Halloween party. It was a lot of fun getting together with everyone, and seeing the kids in their costumes. Sunday Sam helped pass out candy to the kids that came trick or treating to our house. We didn't think she needed to go out since she doesn't really eat too much candy yet. It was a very fun weekend!

15 Months

Sam had her 15 month appointment today. She is doing great, though the doctor mentioned that she had dropped on her weight growth curve. If she drops again we'll discuss what we should do, but at this point the doctor was not very concerned. She had her first of two flu shots, and took it like a champ, only crying for a few seconds and of course giving the nurse a nasty look (I don't know where she gets those looks from...).

She was 20 lbs (10th percentile) and 31 1/2 inches (60-70th percentile). There is no denying she is a Sterken.

She is so much fun right now. She can tell you where most of her body parts are, and especially loves it when you ask where her ears are because she will grab both of them and make a funny face like a monkey. She know what noise most animals say, but is selective in when she will tell you. She is very independent, and will rarely come to us for help with anything.

Eating full meals has been hit or miss lately because she is easily distracted. If she is not strapped into her high chair she will usually not eat much. She will beg for food whenever someone is eating around her though.

Her personality is really evident now, and we know that she is going to give us a run for our money in all that she does, but it sure is fun.

Pumpkin Patch

One Saturday mid-October Sam and I joined some friends at the Hermanson Pumpkin Patch. Sam loved the animals that she got to pet including goats, a donkey, and a cat. They also had a calf, rabbits, and goldfish, which she would have gladly pet if I would have let her.

She loved the small pumpkins and gourds and tried to walk away with a bunch of them. We left with just a small one, just the right size for her to carry around everywhere.

After the pumpkin patch Sam got to go to her friend Ben's house while BJ and I went to the Wisconsin/Ohio State football game. By the way she slept in Sunday I think she had a lot of fun with Ben and his parents.

Wedding

Please excuse the LONG absense in blogging. It's been a busy summer. I'm hoping to catch up so we have a record of the fun we had, which means some of my posts may be old.

The first weekend in October we went to a wedding for one of BJ's co-workers. The wedding was held at the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells. We got to the reception late, because we got very bad directions the first time we asked at the front desk. Luckily we showed up just as dinner was starting, so we didn't have to skip dinner.

We brought Sam with us because we really didn't know that many people at the wedding, and thought she would be a good distraction for us, and also a great reason to leave if we needed to leave early.

Sam did great all through dinner, and then started getting restless. I ran around with her for a while, and she was miss social butterfly. Going up to everyone she walked by and waving, or even getting picked up by some of them. She was having so much fun.

Then they started the formal dances. During the father/daughter dance I couldn't hold her anymore, and she ran out on the dancefloor to point at the lights and dance. I grabbed her as quickly as I could, and had to leave the room because she wanted to go back so bad.

Once they started open dancing Sam was on the dance floor for every song. She was either dancing by herself, or someone had her in their arms. She loved it, and had some very interesting moves.
